Open Call Public Art for Lujiazui Harbor City
2016
Shanghai, CN

In 2016 TMML responded to the call for projects Public Art for Lujiazui Harbor City. The organization called on artists to think about The New Land King of China, a port district of Shanghai dotted with housing that was to undergo a total transformation to become a 250,000 m2 ‘rational space’ devoted to global finance. TMML found the assignment addressing environmental issues, diversity, modernity, humanity and so on to be rather vague. The project concerned forty-three sites in the city, fifteen of which were pre-attributed to renowned artists. In September 2016 TMML proposed the project Nothing for plot number 58. As the title suggests, the work consisted of ‘nothing’: the artists felt that nothing more could be added to Lujiazui. The idea, drawing on the tradition of the void in art, was that Nothing should encourage passers-by to think critically. In July 2017 TMML was told that their project had been rejected.
