For The Cloud, Mira Sanders and Cédric Noël worked intensely with artist-architect Jolien De Nijs. It is an integrated artwork for the metro stop of Brussels Central Station. The Cloud consists of a monumental ‘misty’ wall drawing composed of hundreds of historical and contemporary impressions of the Brussels urban landscape. The work consisted mainly of blue pen drawings, gilded surfaces and small punctual orange touches. For this choice of colour, the artists took inspiration from Joseph Hayez’s fresco Saint Michael and the Belgian Cities (1952), a work integrated into the main space of the Brussels- Central railway station designed by Victor Horta. The impressions of the Belgian capital aimed to stimulate and surprise passers-by. The artists recorded them during dozens of city walks through Brussels and its nineteen municipalities. The Cloud put forward ‘the intrinsic rather than the spectacular’ by mapping fragments of historic and contemporary Brussels.
